Keep Your Hands Low
To hit lower shots, focus on keeping your hands lower during the follow-through. You can achieve this by placing the ball back in your stance or using a stronger club. Avoid trying to swing too easy as it may not be effective. Instead, concentrate on finishing with your hands low to get a lower trajectory.
Get Your Spine Aligned with Your Forearm
For accurate shots, ensure your swing is on-plane at the top. Look at the photo on the left; you'll see that my right forearm is parallel to my spine, forming a tight triangle with my elbows and arms. This shows that I've rotated my shoulders properly during the backswing.
Power Comes from Your Body
Remember, power in golf comes from your body, not just your arms. To master this, try addressing the ball with your body in a stationary position and attempt to lift the ball without taking a backswing. Rely on your body's motion instead of your hands to control the club. This will help you hit the ball more consistently and with greater distance.
Hinge Your Wrists for Better Shots
To improve iron shots, avoid two common mistakes: taking the club too low to the ground during the takeaway and swinging the arms too far back. Instead, set up with a 45-degree angle between your left arm and the clubs haft. During the takeaway, keep your hands close to the ground while quickly lifting the clubhead. This will create the right wrist hinge and improve your ball striking.
Fix Your Slice with Your Elbow
If you struggle with slicing, pay attention to your right elbow position. A flying right elbow often leads to a fade, while a tucked right elbow can promote a draw. For a powerful draw, position your right elbow on or just inside the seam of your shirt. This will allow your shoulders to turn properly and help you achieve better control.
Avoid Slices with the Right Swing Plane
Slicers tend to have an open face at impact due to an improper swing path. Work on swinging from slightly inside-out to correct this. Try the Box Drill: place the top half of a golf ball box parallel to your target line and groove a path that lets the shaft pass just over the box. For slicers, set up the box just forward of the ball and avoid hitting it.
Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down
Hookers should adopt a thumbs-down approach at impact to prevent the clubface from closing too soon. On the other hand, slicers should aim for a thumbs-up position to promote a closing clubface.
Avoid Early Release
Floppiness or an early release happens when your body gets too far ahead of the ball. To prevent this, maintain a firm left side and avoid flipping the wrists. Use an impact bag or a duffel bag filled with towels to practice this correct position.
Improve Chipping Indoors
You can work on your chipping technique indoors using a wooden dowel or broken golf shaft. Focus on keeping your left wrist rigid through the impact zone and maintaining a hands-forward position at address for better contact.
Maintain Your Special K
For consistent swings, maintain the "Special K" angle in your back leg (the angle between your upper and lower leg). Establish an athletic setup with the right posture to keep this angle throughout your swing. Use a mirror to check your form during practice swings and ensure you maintain the correct back leg flex.
